Treat your depression without drugs: new psychotherapies

Go see a shrink becomes less and less taboo, and that's good! More than an alternative, psychotherapy appears to be the treatment of choice, the essential motive for walking out of depression.
Unlike drugs, psychotherapy is a moving phenomenon. If each step (that of going to see a shrink) is singular, the evolution of psychotherapy is also. Psychotherapy stimulates as much as it supports the individual who wishes to say good-bye to his / her / its ill-being. Faced with antidepressants, psychotherapy gains points.

The psychotherapeutic work is a personal and personalized way, sometimes scabrous, sometimes hesitant, but not devoid of happy moments.

Since the advent of psychoanalysis and cognitive-behavioral therapy, many new 'word therapies' have emerged. And the first steps of the last born are very promising.

In 'new generation' psychotherapies, the therapist acts as a guide to the 'wellness' destination and autonomy. The program ? To learn to listen to oneself, to accept oneself as one is, to welcome one's emotions in respect, more than in withdrawal, etc. We take stock of these 'new' psychotherapeutic approaches, born of the current generation:

  • Cognitive Therapy Based on Full Consciousness
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
  • Acceptance Therapy and Engagement,
  • Schema therapy

Depression in children and teens

About 3% of children and 14% of teenagers suffer from depression. But it is not always easy to identify ... How to recognize the signs of depression in young people?

Which therapy?

These 'new age' therapies still date back, for some, to the 1990s. Listing of the most popular techniques:

  • Cognitive Therapy Based on Full Consciousness

Better known as English, Mindfulness Cognitive Based Therapy (MBCT) is a therapy that has been inspired by Eastern meditation techniques. It is based on group sessions done once a week for 8 weeks. The aim of the sessions is to learn how to meditate and gradually gain a little more perspective on oneself and one's life, in order to better cope with difficulties.

Large studies, including one published in 2016 in the Lancet, have proven the effectiveness of MCBT in the prevention of depressive relapses, and more recently in the actual treatment of depression.

  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

TIP is a brief therapy that takes place on a maximum of 20 sessions. Through the sessions, we learn to better understand the relationships with what surrounds us (the entourage and external events), then improve, by building self-esteem and relationship tools.

This therapy has been recognized as effective in the treatment of depression.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)

The interest of this psychotherapy is to learn to accept your emotions, and to commit to daily behaviors rewarding. ACT assumes that depression is rooted in the rigid struggle against our emotions. It is therefore all about exercising not to fight against one's own thoughts.

The effects of ACT on depression are so far very promising.

  • Schema therapy

The most recent schema therapy comes from North America. From a questionnaire of 205 questions, the therapist is able to target the dysfunctional 'schemas' of each individual. For Dr. Yasmine Liénard, these 'schemes' are 'glasses with which we see the world'.

Depending on the history of life, early relationships (which go back to early childhood), these 'glasses' can be rigid, turbid, or tinted, enclosing a more or less pathological functioning. The identification of these dysfunctional 'schemes' makes it possible to establish a personalized therapeutic project.

Expert consultant: Dr. Yasmine Liénard, psychiatrist specializing among other cognitive therapy based on mindfulness, author of the book "For a modern wisdom: Therapies 3rd generation" (Editions Odile Jacob).
