Scoliosis: the causes

The causes of scoliosis are often idiopathic, that is, no cause is found.

There is sometimes a family predisposition. Otherwise, they may be due to neuromuscular diseases such as myopathies, hypotonia in paralysis, for example ...

These scoliosis occurring in a specific pathological context require special care often multidisciplinary (with different medical specialists).

We must distinguish between true scoliosis and scoliosis.

True scoliosis is a twist of one or more vertebrae in the three planes of space: a twist in relation to the axis of the spine, an inclination in the frontal plane and in the sagittal plane.

Depending on the location of the deformity, scoliosis may result in increased thoracic kyphosis (arched back), if the pathology affects the thoracic vertebrae, an increase in lumbar lordosis (hollow back) if it affects the lumbar vertebrae.

Scoliotic attitudes are an inclination of one or more vertebrae but only in the frontal plane to the right or to the left. They are children who sit badly at the table who are often told "stand up straight! "... they are easier to treat than true scoliosis.
A scoliosis that appears early in childhood will tend to increase and become important, it is necessary to intervene before the damage is irreversible and the treatment too heavy.
