Hemorrhagic rectocolitis (RCH): the testimony of a patient

Céline, 41, recounts her illness by her testimony ...

How did your illness appear?

At once. Overnight. One day, it was fine, the next day I was sick. Very tired. I went to the bathroom. I saw odd traces in my stool. But OK. I did not worry anymore. The next day, I started having very violent abdominal pain. In fact, I was bent in half because of colic. I was in pain, and I had to run as quickly as possible to the toilet, otherwise I would have done under me. I can not control myself.

I was 20 years old at the time, I do not tell you how this kind of situation is pleasant to live! Short. It lasted several weeks like this. I thought of a gastro.

And, one day, there was plenty of blood in the stools and weird substances. There, I went to see my doctor and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

What have you been given as treatment?

Anti-inflammatories. But it did not really work. That is to say, concretely, my life was composed as follows: terrible abdominal pains, diarrhea, 10 or 15 times a day that left me completely exhausted. I could not continue working.

I ended up at the hospital, completely dehydrated. I was at 15 to 20 stools a day. And there, the doctor put me on cortisone. And I found myself in remission.

How is your life going now?

Wrong. Can not go to the restaurant with friends. Working is hard, I'm tired, and I always need to know where the toilets are and stay close to them. It's terrible. Because we feel dirty. This disease is like a humiliation. We risk getting on at any time. You imagine what it is for a girl. Shame. And fatigue, pains. It's a nightmare.

For now, I'm in remission ... I have a normal life. Finally, almost normal. Because, in fact, I think about it all the time. I live in the anxiety that it starts again. Maybe it will not start again. But, maybe I'll have another push tomorrow morning. That means I can not do projects. It made me completely depressed.

My only chance is to have contacted an association of patients. With them, and only with them, I can talk normally about my illness.
