Osteoporosis: complications

Osteoporosis gives by definition fragile bones, they are likely to break: this is the gravity of this disease. The most common fractures are those of the femoral neck (at the hip), wrist fractures and vertebral fractures.

Among the complications: vertebral fractures sometimes go unnoticed. We speak improperly of vertebral settlements. They are people who "pile up", their backs are arched, the size decreases. A radiograph of the spine will show fractured vertebrae, more or less well consolidated and osteoporosis.

Minimal trauma, a fall in height, a misstep can lead to a fracture in someone with osteoporosis.

Fractures in the elderly can have important consequences. They may lead to disability and loss of autonomy or even death. After a femoral neck fracture, the risk of death is 20% in the following year.

It is impossible to predict the severity of the first fracture due to osteoporosis and the trauma it will cause. On the other hand, we know that after this first fracture, the others may become chained: for 25% of those affected, a second fracture occurs in the year following the first.
