NASH: the treatments

The hygiene of life

In the presence of NASH, it is important to adapt the diet and to have a goal of weight loss and physical activity.

The diet must include a decrease in energy intake but also an exclusion of foods at risk of inducing NAFLD.

The sporting activity must be adapted to each one so that it can last in time.

Weight loss most often improves liver tests and histology.
All these measures make it possible to fight against insulin resistance.

Drug treatment

Medical treatment may be used for patients with NASH at the stage of cirrhosis or advanced fibrosis. There are some molecules available but their use is very specific and requires the advice of a specialist hepatologist and is discussed on a case by case basis.

On the other hand, we have treatment to fight against the risk factors of NASH. Statins have an indication for lowering LDL cholesterol levels and preventing cardiovascular risk.

Surgery

Bariatric surgery allows weight loss in obese patients and sometimes improves diabetes.

In cases of advanced, decompensated cirrhosis, liver transplantation is necessary to improve liver survival but does not correct cardiovascular risk-related mortality.
