Myopia: causes and symptoms

As has been said, in case of myopia, the person sees badly from a distance and normally close. This means that the image does not focus on the retina, the membrane comprising light-stimulated receptors located at the back of the eye. In fact, the image is formed in front of the retina because the eye is too long. The cause of myopia is therefore an eye a little too long.

In far vision, the accommodation is at rest, the eye does not "work" to adapt its vision. The lens (lens) and surrounding muscles can not intervene to focus the image on the retina. They will do it when the myopic looks closely ... and there, the myopic does not need optical correction to see closely.

Depending on the importance of myopia, it was divided into 3 types:

Myopia is of 3 types :

  • mild myopia between 0 and -2 dioptres,
  • average myopia between -2 and -8 dioptres,
  • strong myopia below -8 dioptres, up to -20 diopters.

Note that myopia is often associated with astigmatism revealed by a blurred vision of certain lines (vertical, horizontal, or oblique).

The symptoms of myopia are well known. Myopia is manifested by poor vision from a distance, if a person squints to see a sign or does not recognize people in the street, it is possible that it is shortsighted. It is easily realized by distinguishing less well some words or phrases from afar, the characters are unclear.

We suspect that this is very important for certain activities, such as driving.

The ophthalmologist assesses the importance of myopia during the consultation in his office. He can perform a fundus examination to assess the state of the retina. In a myopic person, there is indeed an increased risk of retinal detachment. The ophthalmologist takes the opportunity to explore other elements of eye health according to the age of the person: research and screening for glaucoma, cataracts, etc.

In children:

A child who does not see well, does not always show his gene. Also it is important to visit an ophthalmologist regularly. When a child begins to squint, to get closer to his books for reading or his notebooks to write, these symptoms should prompt his eyes to be examined. Myopia is sometimes associated with strabismus that must be treated as quickly as possible.
