Kidney disease: the causes

High blood pressure and diabetes are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease.

But there are also other causes:

  • kidney damage (glomerulonephritis),
  • diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus,
  • infectious causes (chronic kidney infections),
  • toxic causes (such as an abuse of anti-inflammatory drugs),
  • rare genetic and hereditary diseases.

However, as 30% of patients consult a kidney specialist at an advanced stage of the disease, the cause can not always be determined. Indeed, to be able to make a connection between the cause and the disease, one must be able to diagnose the disease early.

There are 5 stages of the disease: stage 1 is the least "aggressive" and stage 5 is the most advanced renal failure.

We are talking about :

  • chronic kidney disease for stages 1, 2 and 3.
  • chronic renal failure for stages 4 and 5, we talk about

The elderly are the most affected by kidney diseases. In dialysis structures (artificial kidney), the majority of patients are over 60-65 years old.

Indeed, with age, the kidney ages, works less well and becomes the preferred target of complications.
