The cells from the cord blood will initially be analyzed and then collected and stored in specialized blood banks. The blood stem cells from the placenta, will be used to treat patients suffering from blood diseases or leukemias ... Patient side, the transplant (or transplantation) of cord blood, is performed by performing a transfusion.
The first cord blood transplant was performed in France in 1988 by Professor Eliane Gluckman (hematologist), in a child suffering from a blood disease (congenital bone marrow disease).
These transplants are today often intended for children. In them, the quantities of stem cells do not need to be very important. In recent years, these transplants have also been used in adults for the treatment of certain leukemias, lymphomas, etc. Cord blood transplantation is an alternative to conventional bone marrow transplantation.
