Deodorant: deodorants without aluminum

Deodorants without aluminum are more and more sought after. The reason ? The bad reputation of aluminum salts, these salts that can limit perspiration: by decreasing the size of the pores of the skin, aluminum salts reduce the sweat secretion, and thus the flow of perspiration.

At first sight, aluminum salts seem to be THE solution to put an end to a problem of excessive perspiration. But here it is: we have read repeatedly that deodorants containing aluminum salts would be harmful to our health and involved in the occurrence of certain serious diseases such as breast cancer, Alzheimer's disease. As studies continue, the debate remains controversial.

So, what is it really? Do deodorants without aluminum really endanger our health? And on the other hand, are aluminum salts really necessary for a deodorant to be effective?

Deodorants without aluminum

Hydrochloride aluminum salts, present in most antiperspirant deodorants, are sometimes wrongly accused of triggering breast cancer. Numerous studies on the subject, however, have not proved this statement.

These rumors began when researchers found these aluminum salts in small amounts in some breast cancer samples, and suspected they had little hormonal activity. But comparative studies have been done since then, and in fact there has been no evidence of an increased risk of breast cancer associated with the use of these cosmetics.

According to observations, the cutaneous barrier would not allow the passage of aluminum salts in the blood, even applied on a shaved skin. And, in 2008, for the Afssaps (French Agency for Sanitary Safety of Health Products), "the data on the safety of these products containing aluminum seem satisfactory".

Following new risk assessment studies related to aluminum exposure, Afssaps recommends, in a new report from 2011:

  • restrict the concentration of aluminum in antiperspirants or deodorants to 0.6%.
  • do not use cosmetic products containing aluminum on damaged skin .

If it is therefore preferable to use a deodorant without aluminum on irritated skin, it is in all cases recommended to avoid deodorants containing synthetic aluminum salts. These must be indicated on the product label with the words "aluminum hydrochloride" or "aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex GLY".
