Abortion: how is an abortion done (abortion)?

The legislation on abortion varies greatly from country to country, including within Europe. So, what about abortion in France? How does this work in practice? Here are all the information you need to know.

In France, the public health code allows women to abort in case of unwanted pregnancy. The pregnant woman is the only person who can decide to have an abortion or not. Abortion can only be performed by a doctor, up to 12 weeks of pregnancy (or 14 weeks of amenorrhea - 14 weeks - weeks without menstruation). Abortion can be done in two ways: either by the absorption of drugs up to 7 weeks of pregnancy (or 9 weeks), beyond a surgical abortion (by aspiration of the embryo) is proposed (without exceeding the legal deadline of course).

Abortion is now commonly practiced in France, more than 210, 000 abortions are performed each year. One in five pregnancies is interrupted today. In the majority of cases, abortion occurs only once in a woman's life.

To make a voluntary termination of pregnancy, the woman can contact a center of orthogenesis (hospital or clinic), or a city doctor (if the doctor has signed an agreement with a health facility, and is authorized to practice - the list of licensed physicians is available at the family planning and education center near you). The woman can also contact a doctor from a Family Planning and Education Center - CPEF. In all cases, these professionals are bound by medical secrecy.

Our advice: if you have passed the 5 weeks of pregnancy (7 weeks without menstruation - 7 weeks), it is recommended to go directly to an orthogeny center in a hospital or clinic, because even if the drug solution is proposed, taking the 2nd medicine must be done in the hospital.
Other important information: from 7 to 8 weeks of amenorrhea, an abortion by surgical method may be proposed.

The necessary documents

Only the Vitale card or a certificate issued by the social security is necessary to carry out an abortion. However, it is important to know that mail will arrive at the home and in the name of the person registered on the Vitale card. What can be problematic ... If the patient does not want it, you should ask the social security fund a card bearing his own name (Vital Card of independent rights holder) and mentioning his home.

State Medical Aid guarantees the respect of the anonymity in the procedures of assumption of responsibility and thus of mails; in certain situations, it is sometimes necessary to ask for it, but the delays are sometimes long; for any information concerning the anonymity, it is necessary to speak to the staff: doctor, social assistant ....

Whether it is with the city doctor or the hospital, a personal file is created, and all the steps are recorded, including informed consent attesting the agreement to carry out an abortion signed by the woman, a parental authorization for them. minors or the name of the accompanying person.
