Acupuncture: the indications

In 2002, the WHO (World Health Organization) published a list of pathologies that could be supported by acupuncture.

In Western medicine, acupuncture is mostly applied in the treatment of pain . But it also indicated in prevention or treatment of so-called functional disorders, that is to say related to the functioning of certain organs.

Thus, acupuncture can be proposed in:

  • joint inflammatory pain,
  • gastric problems,
  • constipation,
  • allergies,
  • eczema,
  • dental pain ...

But beware, before considering treatment with acupuncture, the doctor must ensure that there are no specific organic lesions causing these problems (such as an infection, a tumor ...). For example, there is no need to go to an acupuncturist if the tooth pain is due to decay or gingivitis.

Other areas of application may be:

  • headache
  • sleep disorders
  • smoking cessation: acupuncture can provide support for stopping smoking and facilitating weaning.
  • diet: more and more people also have returns to acupuncture to lose weight.
  • pregnancy: acupuncture can indeed relieve some ailments before, during, and after childbirth.

Good to know: Pregnancy is an important area of ​​application for acupuncture. The great advantage of acupuncture is that this practice has few side effects and contraindications, so little risk for the future mother and the unborn child (if it is practiced by a midwife or doctor experimented). Moreover, acupuncture is beneficial both before, during and after pregnancy!
