Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an episode of inflammation of the bronchi. It can be of infectious origin: often of viral origin, and in rare cases (less than 10%), of bacterial origin.

These are either acute bronchitis with fever and cough as the main signs. Acute bronchitis may also be due to an allergy that causes irritation, inflammation of the lining of the bronchial interior.

Chronic bronchitis can also occur, often with persistent cough and sputum production. This is in fact a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also known as COPD. This bronchitis is mainly due to tobacco, and may compromise the respiratory functions when this bronchopneumopathy is in an advanced stage of evolution.

Infectious bronchitis occurs especially when winter viruses spread (rhinovirus, influenza virus ...). Supported in time, these acute bronchitis do not cause major sequelae. In case of allergic origin, there are now also effective treatments.

It is usually the general practitioner who deals with acute bronchitis, or even chronic bronchitis. For complicated cases or for severe forms of COPD, follow-up by a pulmonologist may sometimes be necessary.
