Hypnosis comes from far away! In ancient traditions, healers, wizards, shamans have always used trance to heal. Trance is a state of modified consciousness. One is not quite asleep, nor quite awake. It is a little the particular state where the conscious and the unconscious can finally meet and enter into communication.

In the West, it is from the 18th century that some doctors (like the Austrian Anton Mesmer) discover or rediscover the therapeutic possibilities of hypnosis. This is classic hypnosis. It works from very precise instructions given by the practitioner to his patient: injunctions based on: "do! go! come back! etc.). Orders. This classic hypnosis is still used today to treat certain phobias or physical pains.

In the middle of the 20th century, a new form of communication under hypnosis developed. A technique developed by the American psychiatrist and psychologist Milton Erickson. She gave birth to Ericksonian hypnosis. For this psychotherapist, our unconscious knows a lot more about ourselves than our conscious. And for him, the intentions of the unconscious are always positive, the unconscious is seen as an immense reservoir of resources. Even an embarrassing symptom, such as a phobia, has a positive utility in the first place. To remove the symptom, for him, is not enough. He tries to listen to these annoying symptoms and to ask directly to the unconscious, what is their meaning.

Erskonniene hypnosis is not a directive therapy, but a technique where the patient is fully involved and active. In a state of trance, he and his therapist will have access to his unconscious.
