Hysteria: treatments

In disorders of the histrionic personality without associated symptoms, no treatment is indicated, except a psychotherapy to get rid of this inappropriate psychological functioning.

As for the conversational symptoms, their treatment is particularly difficult. Drug treatments (antidepressants, anxiolytics) are prescribed with caution by the doctor. On the one hand because their interest is discussed, on the other hand because the hysteric is likely to find secondary benefits. The bodily approaches are interesting, but pay attention to the eroticization of the relations with the therapist.

Analytical psychotherapies are traditionally indicated in case of hysteria. But other therapies, such as hypnotherapy and EMDR, seem to have a significant interest in the treatment of transient symptoms, regardless of their clinical presentation.

For the entourage, as for the doctor, it can be difficult to find the right balance between the rejection of the hysterical person and the excessive complacency. What is important to bear in mind is the suffering that causes these symptoms.

The interest of psychotherapy is to learn to recognize this inner suffering in order to defuse the hysterical symptomatology, and to find the best answers to this suffering. This is to avoid the handicap caused by certain symptoms, both in the socio-professional, family and emotional. It can also help prevent associated mental illnesses, such as depression and suicide attempts.
