Gastro What To Eat

Gastro: what to eat? : in children and adults

In the case of gastroenteritis, dietary advice will be the same for an adult or for a child who is more than two years old.

In children and adults, the risk of major dehydration is minimal. Knowing, however, that the young child, as a very old person, may be more vulnerable in cases of severe gastroenteritis.

Sometimes it's hard to know what to eat, so we're not hungry. It is useless to force oneself. Just be careful not to become dehydrated.

It is advisable to drink, without waiting to be thirsty. It is recommended to drink small amounts of liquid, but frequently.

Beverages (not recommended)

In terms of drinks, all types of beverages are recommended, such as:

The recommended drinks:

  • mineral water (ideally rich in sodium),
  • herbal teas (for example with chamomile),
  • sodas that will bring sugar,
  • soup, vegetable broths (containing minerals, vitamins, salt).

The recommended drinks are:

  • the alcohol,
  • exciting drinks like coffee or tea,
  • fruit juices.
If even the drink does not pass, if swallowing a sip of water triggers a few minutes later, vomiting, needless to insist. Better wait a bit and put the stomach at rest for a while.

Foods to avoid or favor

On the food side, we advise against absorbing:

  • fibers in large quantities: they have the disadvantage of irritating the digestive mucosa already well achieved.
  • citrus fruits or vegetables rich in fiber (salads, green beans, cabbages ...).
  • whole bread or bread with seeds.

The foods to favor in case of gastro:

  • rice,
  • white bread,
  • apples or applesauce,
  • bananas,
  • carrots.

The intestinal lining is irritated by the infection and these foods have the advantage of bringing you calories and feeding you safely.

It is also recommended to eat in small amounts, but more often.

The opinion of the doctor

The advice of a doctor is needed when an infant is concerned, or for any other person when symptoms related to gastroenteritis persist, or that these symptoms are severe (emergency consultation), or abnormal, such as the presence of blood in stool.

In addition to examining the patient, the doctor may prescribe additional tests if he deems it necessary, such as a blood test, a stool analysis ... But he will mainly give dietary advice and possibly prescribe medication (against fever, pain).
