Endometriosis: the advice of the specialist doctor

Interview with Dr. Jean Thévenot, medical specialist, gynecologist-obstetrician.

How do you explain that this disease is so difficult to diagnose?

In fact, the disease is not known as a degenerative disease. We do not think that it can degenerate into cancer, or very rarely. That may be part of the answer. And then the pain reported by the patients are pain, not banal, but trivialized.

Women complain of pain at the time of menstruation, it is relatively trivial or unfairly taken into account.

They also complain of pain during sex. Doctors who actually know this disease, tend to be diagnosed with colitis, or simply do not take sufficient account of their patients' complaints.

As a result, this dragged on and it is unfortunately when the disease provoked disabling lesions that it is diagnosed hoping that the adhesions have not provoked, in the meantime, sterility. Some women sometimes wait ten years before the disease is discovered.

At what age are women most often affected?

It is a disease of the young woman, the woman of age to conceive. The pains often appear at the time of adolescence. The girl who hears many received ideas, thinks, and her mother with her, that it is inevitable. She is therefore slow to consult. And it is old enough to conceive, when she wants a child, or when the pains have become too violent, or totally by chance, that the disease is discovered.

That said, the disease can evolve in several times. A pregnant woman, for example, no longer suffers from her illness, the time of her pregnancy.

It makes sense: while she is pregnant, her endometrium is at rest. She has no more rules. Hormones are no longer secreted. She thinks she does not have anything. But, a few years or months later, it comes back.

What main advice would you give?

Facing pelvic pain, always consider a diagnosis of endometriosis. It is a very common disease and really too often responsible for infertility so that it is neglected as it is still today.

Seasonal depression

Seasonal depression is a true form of depression that begins in the early fall and can last until spring and the good days that come with it. Because of this reason, we talk about seasonal depression. To carry the diagnosis of seasonal depression, the following criteria are necessary: the regular onset of major depressive episodes in early fall; the spontaneous resolution of these depressive episodes in early spring; complete remission in the intervals (or transition to a manic or hypomanic state); the consequential nature of these episodes; the possibility of non-seasonal depressive episodes,

Zona: testimonials

Testimony of Renée, 62, retired. Could you tell us about your shingles? I'm not sure if I had chickenpox, or I do not remember it anymore. But I had 3 zonas which I still remember today. One at the age of 45 in 1993, then another in 2000 at 52, and finally 5 years ago, I had the 3rd manifestation of my shingles.
