Autism: the testimony of Eglantine Eméyé, a committed mother: An association dedicated to autism

Following the interview of Eglantine Eméyé, TV presenter and mother of a child suffering from autism. She explains the motivations that pushed her to participate in the creation of the association " A step towards life", of which she is president ...

Why have founded an association dedicated to autism?
Eglantine Eméyé: I decided to create an association to take my son and other children out of isolation, and to create a reception and support structure where they could benefit from quality care. and in reduced numbers. Indeed, only a small number of experimental structures exist in Paris, and there is of course very little space. The association also aims to provide financial support to families because this type of care is very expensive. We are also developing a family-friendly right to respite structure.

What is the difference with other associations?
EE: We aim to promote behavioral methods such as the ABA method so that children work with trained professionals and always in individual sessions, which allows them to have a suitable program and to evolve at their own pace. We are also open to any complementary methods that have proven successful in other countries and we encourage the training of professionals and volunteers in these new approaches.

The association supports children in their ordinary schooling where possible. Moreover, unlike other associations, we organize sports and leisure activities outside school time.

What is your opinion on the Autism Plan? Is the government doing enough ?

EE: The Autism Plan which aims - among others - to increase the creation of places for children and adults with autism, to promote early diagnosis or to encourage the information and training of professionals in the medico-social sector, in theory seems to meet the needs and expectations of families.

However, in practice, the reality is unfortunately often far enough away from all these measures and parents facing autism remain left to themselves in a society where they have to fight for care, schooling, and re-education of their children only to obtain financial aid.
