Interview with Nadine Cohen Zerbib, director of the "les rives" reception center located in Pantin, specialized in Alzheimer's patients. It sheds light on the non-drug solutions and methods used ...
What non-drug solutions do you use?
Nadine Cohen Zerbib : The workshops we offer use simple mediators such as numbers and words, painting, board games or games of skill. The goal is to work on memories, concentration, coordination of gestures. In addition, we have set up workshops in music therapy, gardening, and theatrical expression. In these therapies, emotion is highlighted. Because it is important for a patient with Alzheimer's disease who forgets the past and has difficulties to project himself into the future, to be able to live moments of well-being, and express his feelings without taboos.
How are patients selected for this type of activity?
NCZ . Patients at the center must have sufficient physical and mental resources for the proposed therapies. The multidisciplinary team evaluates through interviews and tests whether the patient has the resources to follow the proposed activities. The upcoming opening of a support and respite platform will help caregivers in their search for respite solutions, and support home care in the best possible conditions.
The results of these techniques are there, but how long are they verifiable?
NCZ : The evolution varies from one patient to another. Some may see results after one month, others after months. And of course, there are also the patients who do not adapt to the center, and who have to turn to other institutions or organizations. In the latter case all decisions are made with the patient and the family. But in the vast majority of cases, patients adapt fairly quickly and the returns are positive.

What are the next cultural initiatives organized for Alzheimer's patients?
Nadine Cohen Zerbib : We are continuing the partnership with Cine 104, which was very popular among patients and families. We are also planning different cultural outings in a dance academy or conservatory. And the creation of intergenerational workshops (nurseries, meetings with children ...)
How can we improve on non-drug treatments (openings of more centers? ....)
NCZ . : It is essential to make the most of this sector, to experiment again and again with new initiatives. However, we are limited by our budget of public funds, so we are obliged each year to look for private donations, which is conditional on the continuation of activities.Do you want to share, to share your experience?
